A wayfaring account of practice.

LIGHT-PAPER is a booklet that records, in a diary-like manner, the ongoing practice of making lighting with paper. Rather than presenting a fixed recipe, it simply traces one practitioner’s path, leaving room for each reader’s own transformation of practice.

No dimensions or clearly defined procedures are provided, so in a sense it could be seen as an unhelpful record. Yet through the photographs and text, it becomes clear that it is possible to shape one’s everyday life by working with one’s own hands, rather than relying entirely on ready-made products.

What I want to address here, however, is the precariousness of the word “DIY.” When making with one’s own hands becomes the goal in itself, it can stop being a sustainable practice that fits comfortably within everyday life—and instead create a sense of distance from making. What we should be considering is whether we can build our lives sustainably, with affection, at a cost that feels appropriate to us. Working with our own hands is, at most, one effective means toward that end. To do so, rather than forcing ourselves to make everything from scratch, we should be willing to combine and embrace the bricolage of ready-made products as well.

Lighting, in particular, tends to become expensive if we pursue high quality in the product itself. But if we understand the “quality” of light as something that emerges through its relationship with our living space, then buying an expensive product is not the only answer.
