How to hang

Booklet / 2023
by Takumi Fukushima

Living with, Responding to, the Environment.

In the summer, you can see paper lanterns hanging from the eaves all over my town. The "fixtures" used to hang them are not crafted by professionals, but are instead improvised by the local residents. Their forms adapt to the various shapes of the eaves; they are rough-hewn, yet highly functional and beautiful. Using limited materials to solve the problem of "how to hang them," these improvised designs emerge from a kind of dialogue with the eaves, offering a glimpse into a wealth of thought and creativity.
