Assemble is a series that introduces variation and one-of-a-kind qualities into slip casting—a forming method mainly used for the mass production of ceramic products. Typically, a mold implies a fixed way of assembling and reproduces a single shape from a single mold. In Assemble, however, the mold is divided into block-like parts. By freely configuring these blocks like building blocks, a wide range of forms can be produced using the same set of modular mold blocks. Because the blocks are assembled anew each time, inevitable shifts and other indeterminate factors come into play. As a result, the exact same shape cannot be reproduced, and each piece develops its own distinct expression.
Assembleは、排泥鋳込みという主にセラミック製品の量産に用いられる成形方法に、個体差や一点物の要素を持たせたシリーズです。
通常、型とは「組み方に決まりがある」 「一つの型で一つの形状を再現する」
という概念を持ちますが、Assembleでは型をブロック状にし、積み木のように自由に構成することで、同じブロック型を用いながら様々な形状を作ることができます。
また、その都度組み立てて使うため、必然的にズレなどの不確定な要素が介在し、同一の形状を作ることができず一つ一つが違った表情を持ちます。
Mass production is built on carefully considered design to ensure quality and speed, and it has become a foundation of contemporary manufacturing—a system that delivers well-made products widely into our lives. Yet at the same time, I feel we are moving toward a pattern of consuming inexpensive goods in rapid cycles, where the relationship between people and objects grows thinner. I want to make things that can stay close over time—objects through which, in everyday life, we can feel time, context, and how they came to be from the inside.
